Pain Made Us Human
By Ozanna Wilder
Feet stumble across hydrothermal cascades,
Where tephra happiness comes with settings,
And basaltic glass waltzes with the waxing moon.
Compensation rolls for lithium-ion culled stock:
A ring of worms, a pillared wreath, acidic wastelands,
Not worth a two-penny dam.
Selfish synthetic hands hold the bag and pump
A fountainless, waterlogged future
Where the cockalorum masses snap
The singing ruby apples off amber stems.
Then She arrived, a suggestion full of sorrow.
Holster your willowed young ones; take up the cudgel.
The cure will cast out the delayers
In this world and in the world to come.
Rise, young one, She says.
Enter the valley of ten thousand treacles,
Lay one palm on the bark and choose life.
